boomer was adopted from the humane society, so his past is a mystery. several clues have led his owners to believe that he may have been raised by cats, as he likes to pounce on things much like a cat and is extremely tactile with his paws, including the time he figured out how to get up and walk on the kitchen counter! but like all dogs, he enjoys his sleep. his favorite place to lay is by the window, which you can see with this very pensive photo shot!

don't worry though, he's not mr. serious all the time. we hear he smiles a lot these days.

skye is a 3 year old pit bull who is awesome because her energy knows no bounds! she is one of the happiest, silliest dogs around (as seen below!). what makes parker & skye even more awesome is that when it's time to settle down, they love nothing more than a nice loooong nap (and some snoring on skye's part!).

foto friday best buds

congratulations to this week's foto friday winners - bomba (on the left) and pharaoh (on the right)!!

these two pups became the best of friends after pharaoh was fostered at bomba's home. he came from the Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT), and within weeks it was discovered that he had distemper. with BRAT’s funding and some time pharaoh survived, but unfortunately very weak and with a tick that made his right foreleg almost inoperable.

that's when bomba decided to become pharaoh's physical therapist- they played chase, wrestled and he encouraged him to jump on and off of every couch and bed in the house ignoring his bad leg. thanks to bomba, pharaoh now is able to run in shorter lure coursing events and is the terror of his house!

diy tuesday: chevron rug

this week's diy tuesday is brought to you by one of the greatest design patterns out there: chevron stripes! longing to have more chevron stripes in my life i searched local home stores, thrift shops, and the internet for a rug featuring the pattern. unfortunately everything was way out of my price range! no need to worry though - with a quick tutorial i was well on my way to a chevron rug of my very own!

what you'll need:
-solid color rug - i got a white bathrug from ikea for $2!! (i'd stick to something lighter - white, beige, tan, etc.)
-painter's tape
-paint (i used spray paint, but in the tutorial she painted the stripes with latex paint)

what to do:
1. mark off your plain, old bathmat with the painter's tape to create the zig-zag chevron pattern. make sure that the tape is firmly pressed onto the fabric.

2. go outside! (or a well ventilated area) and spray paint your rug!

3. wait for the rug to dry thoroughly.

4. remove tape and marvel at your craftiness!

diy tuesday: pretty patterned coasters

when i stumbled across this cool diy project for homemade coasters i immediately became inspired. (thanks, kristy!) for quite some time i have wrestled with putting rocky's water and food bowls on beautiful hardwood floors - not to mention the floor dust/dirt that accumulates on a daily basis when you have a pup wreking havoc on your home. but not anymore! i present to you diy homemade puppy-size coasters.

what you'll need:

tiles (any hardware store)
12x12 scrapbook paper
mod podge (any craft store)
clear spray paint (any hardware store)
small felt pads (any hardware store)

what to do:
1. cut the paper into desired square shape - you'll want a small white border so squares should be smaller than the tiles.

2. adhere your paper squares to the tiles with the mod podge using a paint brush (i first covered the edges then worked my way across the entire square) and let dry.

3. spray a coat of clear spray paint and dry thoroughly.

4. attach a felt pad to each underside corner.

5. place under your dog's food/water bowl for optimal craftiness!

& in honor of this glorious fact, i decided to make sugar cookies that matched the colours of the new midnight train pattern!

& like all well-thought-out ideas (a-hem)...this one failed miserably. i am not a free-hand artist, let's be real. so when i attempted to cut shapes without a pattern out of cookie dough-let's just say i wasn't too impressed by the end results...*coughs* here's a picture to show you that not all craft/baking projects we do over here are successes. ouch.

thankfully i saved most of the dough & just made bone & hydrant shaped cookies-that did look great & matched the new pattern.

around molly mutt headquarters we can't get enough of adorable, precious hand pies (no, not you little debbie!) that are currently a big baking trend. due to this fact we bring you this foto friday winner: abby and her pup, honey pie!

honey pie is the sweetest black & white mcnab and as abby and her mom wrote, "the best dog on the planet!" during the day she loves to go for long runs and at night she prefers to cuddle and star gaze - after honey pie got a brand new dog house, extra big and with a brand new bed to match, she decided she would rather sleep under the stars. she grabbed her new dog bed and pulled it out of the new dog house until it landed on the grass. She then laid on her back and looked up at the sky until she finally dozed off.

diy tuesday: peach cobbler

well, it's summertime-and that means some of my favorite fruit is in season. ESPECIALLY peaches. oh my my my my. &-being from the south, there is nothing that sounds better than cobbler-a warm dessert with ice cream (thankfully you can't see my drool as i type this)

i was in charge of dessert for our 4th of july party, so i made...yep-you guessed it. peach cobbler! this is my favorite recipe, and it never fails to impress (it's super simple-which is nice, too!)

*fun tip-to make it easier to peel peaches, cut a small x in the bottom and put the peach in boiling water for 30-45 seconds. then take it out & voila! the peel comes right off.

diy tuesday: chalkboard!

let's talk a bit about how amazing chalkboards are. not only can you start each day off with a brand new slate - with magic (and a bit of science) you can now diy a chalkboard almost anywhere you want! when i first saw chalkboard paint - available at most paint stores (or online at home depot). i was skeptical, but skeptics beware - this stuff really works!

for my diy chalkboard i chose the inside

of my bathroom cabinet mirror. what better time to remind yourself of the various to-dos in life then when brushing your teeth? the steps are easy:

1 - select the area you'd like to chalkboard, clean the surface, and make sure there are no nails, etc. causing any surface bumps. use smooth (no texture, please!) walls only.

2 - using masking tape, mark off the space for your chalkboard, and apply a chalkboard paint within the taped-off area.

3- wait for your brand-spanking-new chalkboard to dry and utilize!*

*depending on where you paint your new chalkboard you might try framing it with an empty picture frame.

diy tuesday: wedding favors!

soooooo, a girl-friend of mine asked me to make cookies as favors for her wedding (*gasp* could i have felt more honored?! probably not...)

oh the possibilities!

because i like to over-think pretty much EVERYTHING, i wanted to do something where the packaging would be easy to take home, and still cute enough to be displayed-as well as taste fabulous.

i used the recipe for the peanut butter oatmeal cookies from annie's eats (they also taste AMAZING when you do the whole sandwich cookie, too...just an fyi...holy bananas they are marvelous!) & increased the size to 3 oz & added peanut butter chips. i printed up fun labels & a recipe card to go behind the cookie, and am putting everything in a cd sleeve (which i embossed with a non-lame wedding stamp)

i think it turned out swell, and the bottom line is, it only cost around $1 a cookie! (ps, if you are looking for me thursday night, i'll be the one in a bathing suit, sweltering in my kitchen for the 5 hours it's going to take to bake them all!)

(*& you can put money on all 3 of my dogs hanging around my feet-like it's their job-waiting for something to fall!)

diy tuesday: oh-so-pretty framed paper

on an impulse a few years ago i bought two vinyl black record (12x12) frames at target. mind you i don't own a lot of (or really any) vinyl and for months kept record sleeves (that i had found at goodwill) in the frames. in a redecorating frenzy i thought, it's time to dump these dingy cardboard covers and move on up!

being a former scrapbooker and to-this-day paper nerd i recalled that paper source, michaels, etc sell 12x12 single sheets of fun patterned paper! this diy assembly literally took minutes - the more difficult part, as usual, was deciding on the color combinations and patterns. i also spray painted the black frames to better suit my rooms - in this case white.

how to DIY:

1. buy a record frame
2. find some pretty paper! (lots of favorites at paper source)
3. if you so choose, remove the glass portion of your frame and re-color the metal frame using spray paint. (mine took two coats to fully cover the black)
4. after drying, place your 12x12 paper in your 12x12 record frame (i had to trim my paper just a bit)
5. always consider placing a picture of your favorite pet inside
6. hang proudly!

diy tuesday: may flowers

san francisco is not known for it's "friendly spring weather" & it can get pretty freaking gloomy. where we live, april showers definitely do not bring may flowers (or june flowers...or july flowers....you can see where i'm headed with this.)

soooooo, because we need a little sunshine, today's craft is fabric flowers! i've probably made 12 dozen of these-mostly because they're awesome. if you are new to a sewing machine, this is a FAB starter project. it takes more skill with scissors & hot glue than anything else! (it's also a great way to use scraps instead of throwing them out)

here's a link to the tutorial (tip #1-rickrack stitch. get into it. my only other tip would be don't freak out if you break threads or your petals aren't perfect-because honestly, most of my best flowers came from giant mistakes. see? i'm already sounding optimistic & poetic!)

at mm headquarters we couldn't be happier that it's beginning to feel a lot like spring in the bay area (and around most of the country)! with fresh new weather comes new excuses to get off our butts and be creative.

in the name of productivity we're starting DIY tuesdays!

the list of to-do DIY (do-it-yourself) projects have piled up over the winter and today we crossed one off - an ipad case courtesy of p.s. - i made this.

a trip to michael's (or any craft store) will give you more duct tape color choices than you'll ever need (& everything else on the list.) the color combination and pattern is up to you! listening to music while making your new ipad case is highly recommended. while at the craft store i heard dancing queen by everyone's favorite swedish pop group. i may or may have not listened to the song on repeat while crafting in the privacy of my own home.

your dog will most certainly love your new fashionable accessory, because let's be honest - who hasn't walked in on their dog using their ipad?

what’s in a high five? according to everyone’s favorite reference source (wikipedia), “a celebratory hand gesture that occurs when two people simultaneously raise one hand, about head high, and push, slide or slap the flat of their palm and hand against the palm and flat hand of their partner.” While great controversy over the originator of the high five remains, we, as a society, have found cause for celebration with national high five day (also known as april 21,2011).

when i started at molly mutt a few months ago i had long dreamed of having a pup of my own. dreams turned into yearning and yearning into obsession until i found the dog who seemed to be made just for me: my new companion, rocky (aka rockster, rock, rocky balboa, and monster). i adopted rocky from a rescue in south san francisco and since then have learned that this mischievous puppy has many tricks up his sleeve…but none as great as the “high five!”

i thought i should take this time to talk about an issue a lot of you know about-and that is terrible stereotyping of breeds. we used a pit bull (one mr. nestor pants) as our model, and when we launched this new pattern, we received such a loving reception from the people of the pit bull community-it was almost unreal!

there are a LOT of great organizations working to bring awareness to the slogan "it's not the breed!" thanks to groups like bad rap & stubby dog, the message is getting out there & helping these lovely dogs!

in honor of their hard work, we would like to donate 10% of all web sales from today through the end of this friday to these 2 rescues. please help us spread the word!!

this time it was the living room.

it all started with this bookcase we wanted to replace the ikea one i've had for 476 years...and it turned into completely changing everything (*sighs*). on the bright side-it looks WAY BETTER.

now, of course, i couldn't find any good pictures of the living room before (see above).

and now (yes, again-this is an appropriate time for a drum roll...!)

ok, so picture this. it's 7:30 am, last sunday, and i have the covers thrown off me as "GET UP!!" is yelled in my ear.

i groggily stumble out of bed into the hallway, where my oldest dog, reb (13 year old lab) is having a serious seizure. he's had them many times before (tensing of the muscles, dilated eyes, etc.)-but this one he just couldn't seem to snap out of. he couldn't walk & his neck was off to the side...(horrific already) and THEN came the constant puking. and when i say constant, i mean WITHOUT STOPPING. exorcist-style.

i sat with him for 2+ hours, thinking (hoping) it would all work itself out...but it really seemed like he had suffered a stroke. he was unable to walk & his neck was permanently tilted & he was completely out of it.

i am hysterical-pretty much "that woman" at the ER vet (and i know i will be when that day does come for real...hey, i've had my 3 pigs for 10+ years! they really are my kids!) the vet calls me in (shaking, trembling, swollen-faced me) & tells me it's probably vestibular disease.

in short (apologies, this gets a little science-tastic right here), there are two kinds-one that means something is up with the brain (not good) or peripheral (inner ear). needless to say, if your dog has peripheral, it almost always GOES AWAY. the head tilt, puking & drunken walking are because your dog's balance is all jacked up. (ok, that part wasn't scientific...)

scary fact? MANY dog owners euthanize their dogs thinking it has had a stroke when really they are just in a temporary freak out because of an inner ear imbalance.

i walked into the vet's office thinking it was "that day" and it totally wasn't! don't get me wrong, it has been an all around TERRIBLE WEEK (watching your dog stumble, run into walls, not eat, and look like he's been partying a little too frequently is nothing to balk at.) but it does improve, so don't despair!

follow-up: one week later he does still have kind of a tilted head-which may or may not go away. but on a lighter note, it really does make him look very inquisitive, which is pretty adorable.

so you may or may not know that all molly mutt patterns are named after songs (*gasp! it all makes sense now!)

one of the first patterns when we first opened for business was "your hand in mine". it remains, 2 years later, one of our most popular patterns.

since i first heard this song, i knew i would include it my life's soundtrack. it's absolutely perfect for that great transition scene-where each image blurs into the next one, in that muddled movie way. (i can seriously picture this down to the pictures i would use. yes, i am nothing if not a nerd.)

*warning, post is not about dogs...but so close to my heart i just couldn't help myself from writing about it!*

i've been madly in love with chocolate chip cookies (ccc) ever since that first bowl of raw dough i stuck my finger in.

growing up, we only ever had the toll house variety-and i continued to make these until a few years ago. i realized all the chocolate chip cookies i really craved from bakeries & restaurants were better than those toll house ones...but i couldn't put my finger on what it was (it wasn't rocket science, i know-but i was new to the baking world then!)...and made it my life's purpose to find the PERFECT recipe.

(ps, now pretty much everything i bake inevitably turns into a taste test. i can't just try one recipe for red velvet cupcakes, i have to try FIVE. it's gotten out of hand.)

sooooooo....after probably 13 different takes on this illusive, yet epically classic cookie, i have narrowed it down to 2. *please note, all technical, dweeb information is small, so if you don't care about the details, just skip it!*

(and yes...if you are a baking nerd like me, you have read the 476 times that people have written about this very same taste test...but again, the truth has to be known, people!)

this is my go-to, easy & standard-issue amazing cookie. it's the one i make when i just want a good cookie...NOW. it's meaty, but not cake-y (puke) & works every time. (if you've made toll house cookies, remember how sometimes they would be sponge-y & sometimes they would be all thin & crispy...even when you followed the recipe the same way every time?! yea, that doesn't happen here.)
ps, don't be cheap on the chocolate (this sounds bourgeois, but it makes a difference)-and also, don't sub all purpose flour for bread flour...they come out weird if you do!

this is my fancy ccc. the one i make for parties & baby showers & any time i need to present my baking (perfectionist & super overachiever that i am...this one satisfies on all levels)
it is more involved-in terms of ingredients & chilling time (you really REALLY should wait at least the requisite 24 hours before baking them...which can be so tedious & annoying! especially because after you do all the work, you want to eat them...NOW! if you can wait 48 hours they really REALLY are even more delicious, if that could be possible.) they also look absolutely fabulous. they are giant & gorgeous & i've been accused TWICE of buying bakery cookies when bringing these somewhere.

would love to hear if you have a favorite cookie recipe or if you have tried either of the ones above (or *gasp* have an even better one!)

the case of the kitchen stink

i came home after the show...and there was a super not-great smell to the kitchen.

now the kitchen is my domain (clearly)...i buy groceries, i cook all the food, i keep it clean. and that's why i was so puzzled. i am super weird about "freshness" and never let things expire.

what happens over the next few days is like scene out of "obsessive-compulsive disorder, the documentary"
i mopped
i cleaned out the entire refrigerator (including that gnarly space behind the vegetable drawers)
scrubbed dog bowls
bleached the baseboards (thinking maybe left over dog-ness was lurking...)

and STILL THE SMELL.

somewhere last night i started to feel like i was genuinely losing my mind. i asked everyone who came in if they smelled the funk, and of course they didn't. but it didn't matter...my ninja smelling sense was telling me something was OFF. (i really do have a freakish sense of smell-if you make kool-aid within 5 days of my entering your kitchen, i'll know. this is not the best "gift" to have, as it makes cab rides with BO drivers something out of a nightmare)

and then i found it.

oh my GOD i found it.

i was going through the pantry & saw a strange bag of potatoes. i pick up the bag, remembering something my mom had told me about how vile potatoes were when bad...

and there was a slight dampness to just one...so i lifted my fingers to my nose to see if that was the source...

and pretty much have been gagging ever since.

one slightly rotten potato. i'm not kidding. that smell is evil. actually, evil doesn't even begin to cover it. it was so bad my knees kept shaking & i felt light headed for awhile afterward. & to put things in perspective, i pick up dog crap every day. so it's not like i live in a rose-scented world. but this was bad, you guys. horror movie bad.

*ps, i have sworn off the potato for awhile. anything that smells like that when bruised is just not right.

that's right. i am getting my money's worth out of my machine recently. i am a woman possessed. i've made skirts out of old ratty curtains, aprons out of duvet scraps & more purses than louis vuitton (ok, maybe that's a teense of an overstatement...)

lessons i've learned in my recent foray into sewing:
1. seam ripper = bff. i want a cord to wear mine around my neck.
2. i am a complete spaz when it comes to patterns & find i am much better suited to work (& live) without instructions. (big surprise...) the best way to figure out what you want is take something you like, rip it all apart, and sew it all back together!
3. downstairs neighbors can get cranky when you sew at 2 am. *noted*

(the a-line skirt is super easy-once you figure out how to put a zipper in the side...which was a feat-and you can do a million things with it. it's not a pattern so much as a calculation. link here) baby kimono free sewing pattern here-it's super easy & is a great/cheap gift! link here.

**and yes, some of these pictures are awful...blurg. but i've got to SEW people...and that doesn't leave much time for photography.

now, without further ado...molly mutt clean is finally here!

here's how it happened. you know i came up with the dog bed duvets & stuff sacks to make it easier to have a clean dog bed any time. but fact of the matter is-sometimes your dog (DEFINITELY my dogs) still stinks. and since we all want the best for our furry children, i went looking for a natural freshener to spray on the dogs' beds & couldn't find anything that didn't smell like febreeze (GAG) or super perfume-y (which is also vomit-inducing.) i mean, if i want a scent, i'll light a candle...i just wanted something to take the stink of out of the bed without hurting my pigs.

so just like with the dog duvets, since i couldn't find it...i made it! molly mutt "fresh" dog bed freshener was born. and to make a more well-rounded family, we came up with "wash" dog shampoo & "soft" dog coat conditioner.

reb is the dog of the three. he has all of those fabulous traits writers love to wax poetic about - loyalty, obedience & charm. that & the classic sad-lab-face-that-melts hearts...well, needless to say, he's a ladykiller.

he is the only male in a house of strict alpha-females. this has made him into a bit of a pushover & a little bit of a scaredy cat. san francisco is a huge tourist city. this means we encounter tons of random people on our walks. reb is that quintessential american dog-the one people from all of the world want to stop & pet.

meet my dogs, episode 1 - macy

aka macy moo, the black dog, bassador (half basset hound, half black lab), old bluehair, the hunter, sherlock pita-the great bread detective.

macy is a pound dog. she has a gimp front foot (because her first owners were the unmentionable kind of dog owner...the kind that should be drawn & quartered...), but she runs like a ninja, and swims like seal (& actually looks like one in the water.)

one of the most amazing macy-qualities is her ability to discover bread. not kidding. this dog could sniff out even the smallest crust a mile away. she is unbelievably accurate in her bread detection.
